Complete Decongestive Therapy
Complete Decongestive Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that reduces swelling and improves mobility and range of motion. It includes the following components:
Manual Lymphatic Drainage - a light touch massage that stimulates the lymphatic system by moving fluid away from swollen areas.
Compression Therapy - layering bandaging with foam or customized, fitted garments to control swelling and prevent fluid accumulation.
Exercise - improving range of motion and comfort through low-impact movements, while helping reduce swelling and stimulate lymphatic flow
Skin and Nail Care - preventing infections and keeping skin and nails clean and moisturised
Self-Care Management - learning the best practices on how to manage lymphedema at home
Other support services - counselling and nutritional advice
Phase 1: Intensive Phase
The main goal of this phase is to reduce limb swelling and improve skin condition, through therapist-led sessions that cover manual lymph drainage, bandaging, skin care, and exercises.
To get the best results, the gold standard for the intensive phase is 5 days a week for 2-3 weeks.
Phase 2: Maintenance Phase
The maintenance phase aims to sustain the reduced swelling from the intensive phase, through daily compression garment wear, skin care, and exercises.
This phase lasts for months or years, to manage the condition.
