Complete Decongestive Therapy

  • Complete Decongestive Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that reduces swelling and improves mobility and range of motion. It includes the following components:

    • Manual Lymphatic Drainage - a light touch massage that stimulates the lymphatic system by moving fluid away from swollen areas.

    • Compression Therapy - layering bandaging with foam or customized, fitted garments to control swelling and prevent fluid accumulation.

    • Exercise - improving range of motion and comfort through low-impact movements, while helping reduce swelling and stimulate lymphatic flow

    • Skin and Nail Care - preventing infections and keeping skin and nails clean and moisturised

    • Self-Care Management - learning the best practices on how to manage lymphedema at home

    • Other support services - counselling and nutritional advice

  • Phase 1: Intensive Phase

    • The main goal of this phase is to reduce limb swelling and improve skin condition, through therapist-led sessions that cover manual lymph drainage, bandaging, skin care, and exercises.

    • To get the best results, the gold standard for the intensive phase is 5 days a week for 2-3 weeks.

  • Phase 2: Maintenance Phase

    • The maintenance phase aims to sustain the reduced swelling from the intensive phase, through daily compression garment wear, skin care, and exercises.

    • This phase lasts for months or years, to manage the condition.
